'A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and care; it teaches industry and thrift; and above all it teaches trust.’
- Gertrude Jekyll
THE SANCTUARY GARDEN
Many writers have been inspired by gardens, and many gardeners have become writers and painters. The garden goes through many transformations in a year, teaching us that all things change. Winter, although it seems dead and cold is one of the richest times, when compost breaks down the leaves for fuel, insects bury themselves to hibernate and multiply and the mould and mycorrhyzal fungi are spreading underground strengthening the health of new growth. The Sanctuary Garden is a place to be, relax and occasionally have talks, music and events.
The garden at Wishing Tree House in 2013
When Glenys first came in 2013 she was excited to see a blank canvas of lawn. The apple was the only tree in the garden.
"I wanted to run the feeling of a secluded meditation walking garden with a tropical area, huts for studio work and the feeling of quiet creative activity."
"I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a volunteer at Great Dixter in Northiam from 2016 to 2020 when volunteers were laid off due to the pandemic. I soaked up the Dixter ethos. It was my treat of the week, I loved working and learning from the other gardeners and going to the fabulous succession planting talks by Fergus Garret, the head gardener. Everything I know is thanks to them."
